Finish your pre-licensing course
Each state has a pre-lecensing course and certification exam you must complete as one of the first steps to become an insurance agent.
Pass the state’s licensing exam
This is a separate examination from the one you take to get pre-licensing course certification. You must pass this exam in order to get a state license.
Complete your background check
Once you have a state license, you will be required to complete a standard background check. This may include fingerprinting, criminal history and checks depending on the state.
